Fiona Apple

Honestly, haven't really been *into* any music as of late. Seeing as 2011 was sort of a bust year for new music... kinda made the blog suck. Sorry yo. Not like anyone is paying attention.

But holy hell, I think 2012 is going to be a kick ass year for music. New Fiona Apple! I do not know how to be any more excited for this long over due release.

The Van Pelt

If one album had to be selected for “Album of the Year” for 2011 it would have to be The Van Pelt's Sultan of Sentiment. Despite buying and heavily listening to Idaho's You Were a Dick, Explosions in the Sky – Take Care, Take Care, Take Care and other fine but forgetable albums none of them were listened to as much, played as often as this record from 1998.

Since hearing it in 2009 and declaring it to be the best, well one of the best albums that I had ever heard. It is on par with Galaxie 500's On Fire but not better than.

Last year I would go months where it was the album I'd listen to on the bus into work and the bus home from work. Strangely this doesn't seem obsessive to me because I was listening to two or three other albums every day. It was just a habbit I developed.

Now I know why, the album is just over 37 minutes long my daily bus rides were just over 30 minutes long. So if I skipped one of two tracks each play (as I did, favouring no one track over the others) I would be able to listen to the album in its entireity from the moment I got on the bus to the moment I got off of it.

Interesting.

bruce springsteen

Looking at my old music folder I realised that I had listened to a lot of Bruce Springsteen this year. Further thought confirmed this to be true and I welcomed the mix of emotions that washed over me. What does this mean? It is not too much to want to know the answer to that question, is it?

What I do know is I have an appreciation and affection for his work between Born in the USA and Lucky Town, with Tunnel of Love being the stand out from that period. I had always had a fondness of his music from Nebraska to Born in the USA and casual interest in what he had put out before that, but it was Nebraska that particularly appealed to me. Tunnel of Love it seems has taken Nebraska and mixed it with Born in the USA.

There are lots of touching moments on the album. Here is the title track from this delightful album.

Sun Kil Moon

theme song for lying on the floor these last few weeks:

Sun Kil Moon - Gentle Moon.

I often wonder if the name of this band has a double meaning, 1) to pay
homage to Sun Kil Moon (also spelt Sung-Kil Moon, the boxer) and 2) to
amuse/blow the minds of ignorant westerners who are unfamiliar with
the pronunciation of Kil and pronounce the band name Sun Kill Moon.

I really hope so.

Broken Bells

theme song this afternoon:

Broken Bells, The Ghost Inside

I ran across this video right when it came out, then promptly forgot about how awesome the song is.

Never forget!

Wye Oak

theme song for a few weeks:

Wye Oak: Sight, Flight

I'm sort of glad I didn't find this song until now, I think it has the potential to do some real post-break-up-heart-ache-damage. Still, it's beautiful and amazing, and the fiddle will have you crying about something. Anything really.

Magnetic Fields

theme song. right now.

The Magnetic Fields, A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off

this has been a favorite for years. ever since it was sung to me by a darling boy after two weeks of silly romping around that ended in me being a grown-up and him moving... somewhere? neverland maybe? it always puts a smile on my face to think of those two weeks, and how I'm so much better off for having goals and drive in my life. to you, you dear silly boy. wherever you are.
